Via sport, we’re helping girls define optimistic futures

In the UK, nearly one in five young people leave school without qualifications.⁵

Yet we see a unique opportunity to change these futures. By focusing on girls who lack direction and giving them the tools to shape their own futures, we can create positive multiplier effects for their families and societies too.⁶

Offered to girls aged 12 to 18 living in underserved communities, Goal – managed globally by our strategic partner Women Win as part of Futuremakers – provides life skills education through sport and activity-based learning.

In the UK, Goal is delivered by our partner Street League, the UK’s leading sports-for-employability charity. Launched in 2019, this project provides girls greater opportunities to succeed in life and work. Identified by teachers in schools, girls who aren’t engaging in traditional education – because of a lack of confidence, academic ability, or both – are brought into this project. This approach helps ensure more girls are on a path to achieving their potential.

Success story

One of the Goal coaches shared her thoughts about Maya, a young girl in London who previously lacked a safe space to fully immerse in sports.

Via Goal, Maya was able to address different topics in a way that enabled her to feel empowered.

This project has showed her [sport] is more about participation rather than based on ability. This has improved her resilience as she has been participating more in lessons and giving herself a chance to enjoy the session and give it her best.
